What is Oita?

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. The JR Limited Express Sonic speeds from Kitakyushu's Kokura Station to Beppu Station in just over one hour, while Oita Airport is located in an unexpectedly rural part of the prefecture, allowing direct access to the rolling hills of the Kunisaki Peninsula. Oita is also one of the crossing points between Kyushu and Shikoku, with ferries shuttling you over to Yawatahama in Ehime Prefecture. Overnight ferries also take you all the way from Osaka and Kobe into Beppu Port.
