Akita prefecture has seen an increase in visitors by plane since Japan Airlines created the Tohoku air pass, which offers the most wallet-friendly route into the prefecture via Akita Airport. The Akita Shinkansen shuttles visitors on a direct route between Tokyo and Akita - an easy option for JR Pass holders - while journeys by bus are recommended purely for the stunning cedar wood-decked Akita Bus Terminal.
