Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden
Zoo
Approximately a three-minute walk from the Takasakiyama bus stop, this zoo is located at the foot of Mt. Takasaki, with a distinctive shape reminiscent of a bell-shape. It is believed that wild monkeys lived in the area since at least around 1698 because of their description in documents from that time. The mayor of Oita City thought it could be used as a tourism resource and to prevent damage to agricultural crops in 1952, so they began to get gathered up with bait. There are currently two groups that have a total of 1,000 monkeys. In addition to being able to watch friendly monkeys up close, the potato feeding that happens twice a day is a must-see.
