Beautiful European Style Garden In The Center Of Nagoya: Hisaya-Odori Garden Flarie

A medium sized park, Hisaya-Odori Garden Flarie can easily be accessed from Exit 4 of Yabacho Station. Once going up the stairs and getting out of the station, go south toward Nagoya Expressway Route 2 and Wakamiya Odori Avenue, and will find the garden. The garden is free of entry, and once entering the gate, there is a large courtyard and garden with many table chairs and an area where visitors can enjoy BBQ. This garden is located at the southernmost end of Hisaya Odori Park, where the iconic Nagoya TV Tower is. Before the major renovation, the garden began as a miniature theme park focusing on orchids, but changed its name to Hisaya Odori Garden Flarie in 2014 planting more varieties of flowers. Do not confuse this garden with Hisaya-Odori Park which stretches from Yabacho station all the way north to Nagoya Tower. This Flarie Garden is just part of it.

In addition to the large greenhouse, the park has five outdoor gardens, each with different flowers. The Crystal Garden is a large greenhouse where seasonal flowers and ornamental plants spread their leaves vigorously. The Harmony Garden is a gorgeous space where visitors can be mesmerized by colorful roses in pink, orange and white. Clematis, herbs, and colored leaves enhance the colors.

The Water Garden is a pathway with a variety of colorful flowers including seasonal flowers such as hydrangeas and Christmas roses. In such a landscape in harmony with the pond, sitting on the bench by the pond is a perfect place to soak in nature with plenty of sunlight during the daytime. Back in 2018, this pond turned into a Monet’ Pond in collaboration with the exhibition, “Monet 100 years after that” which was held at Nagoya City Museum of Art.

Across from the pond is a lawn area called the Flarie Court, where children can run about and weddings are often held here too. Since there are benches and tables nearby, local families with children drop by for a picnic on sunny days. The border between the Flarie Court and the Water Garden has a series of pillars, walls and motifs which give the appearance of a European-style garden.

Compared to mostly a European style, there is an "Asian Garden" which gives an exotic space inspired by the gardens of Southeast Asian resorts next to the Flarie Court. The bamboo, croton and other plants create such an exotic atmosphere. Back towards the pond from the Asian Garden is the Forest Garden, an open space surrounded by camphor trees. This is a popular spot for wedding photos.

While Nagoya is a small city often undermined and skipped as just being the city for transit, there are still great places to go see like this Hisaya-Odori Garden Flarie, an oasis in the middle of a bustling city which offers locals and visitors a relaxing time surrounded by flowers and greenery. And is also a great place to hang out even if you are tight on budget as the entry to the garden is free. The garden area is usually open daily from 9:30am to 17:30pm with the restaurant open until 22:30pm. The garden is closed on December 31st and January 1st, however, opening and closing hours for restaurants have irregular holidays. When visiting Nagoya or the nearby regions, this is a place visitors might want to take a detour to.
