Saikan Haguroyama Sanrosho at Haguro-san Shrine

Haguro-san is home to some very unique accommodation options as well great day trip options. The Haguro-san Shrine is in fact the only one of the three Dewa Sanzan shrines that stays open year round. A symbol of birth, Haguro-san is typically the first stop visited by pilgrims trekking through this historic shrine area. The temple lodging Saikan Haguroyama Sanrosho offers simple accommodations, with dinner and breakfast provided in the style of Buddhist vegetarian cuisine known as shojin ryori, and in a setting conducive to serious relaxation.

Yudonosan Sanrosho

Another mountain retreat getaway option is a stay at Yudono-san shrine ryokan. Similar to Haguro San’s options this is for the ultimate Buddhist retreat experience. Another type of temple lodging, Yudonosan Sanrosho is very easily accessible via a toll road. Nestled in a valley below the summit, this retreat is only 200 meters from the parking lot and next to the towering red torii gate leading up to the main shrine. Aside from its location, this sanrosho offers two onsen baths that are said to be symbols to the God of Water, as can be seen by the small shrines inside the wooden baths. A stay here is the perfect complement to the mysterious and sacred visit to Yudono-san.
