Each spring, the sakura (cherry blossom) trees bloom across Japan, drawing visitors from near and far.
The latest forecast for Tokyo has announced that the blooming will start from around March 15, with a variety of events taking place during the season and in the lead-up. In this article, we will introduce some of the city's most popular sakura events and sightseeing spots not to miss, such as Roppongi Midtown and the Tokyo Skytree. (Updated on March 3rd )

Midtown Blossom 2020
Featuring around 150 cherry trees, including the much-loved Somei Yoshino, this festival takes place in the garden area of Tokyo Midtown and includes a popular illumination event.
Pink lights will decorate the trees before they bloom while white lights will be used once they’re in flower. Aside from viewing the trees from the street, they can also be enjoyed while dining at one of Midtown’s numerous restaurants.Location: Tokyo Midtown, Roppingi

Meguro River Sakura Festival 2020 (cancelled)
Each year, the Meguro River is illuminated from the mid to upper stream during a popular cherry blossom festival. As soon as you exit Nakameguro Station, you’ll see plenty of stalls set up where you can grab food and drinks to enjoy the occasion. However, due to the the spread of the corona virus, this event has been cancelled.
Access: One minute on foot from Nakameguro Station

Sakura Fes Nihonbashi / Off To Meet
This year will mark the 7th annual Nihonbashi Sakura Festival, which is themed around the concept of “Off To Meet”. A variety of cherry blossom-inspired installations and events will take place in the Nihonbashi area, including sakura artworks, food market and the illumination of trees along Edo Sakura-dori and Chuo-dori.
Location: Nihonbashi, Yaesu and Kyobashi areas
Access: Most venues are accessible on foot from Shin-Nihombashi Station, Mitsukoshimae Station and Nihombashi Station.

Flowers By Naked 2020 - Sakura -
Held each year since 2016, the annual Flowers By Naked digital art exhibition will take place at the Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall in the lead up to the hanami season. A highlight will be their cherry blossom-viewing space “Ousai”, which combines projection mapping, art creation, and real cherry blossoms.

Sakura and Jellyfish (aquarium closed between March 1st to March 15th)
To coincide with the hanami season, the Sumida Aquarium is hosting an interactive art exhibit “Sakura and Jellyfish”, where cherry blossom trees will be projected onto their eight jellyfish tanks. In addition, Sakura and Jellyfish soda will be sold at the Penguin Cafe.

teamLab Planets Tokyo DMM
To celebrate the hanami season, teamLab Planets Tokyo DMM will have two themed works on display at their innovative Toyosu museum. Aside from the “Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers” installation, there will also be a digital exhibit where you can walk amidst what appears to be a pool filled with carp.

Skytree Round Theater (closed between March 1st to March 15th)
The Skytree Round Theater will host a limited spring program to coincide with the cherry blossom viewing season, as will the Konica Minolta Planetarium "Tenku" Sakura Dome (20 February to 7 April). In addition, the Solamachi Sakura Festival will also take place at the Tokyo Skytree from 28 March to 5 April.

Takanawa Sakura Festival 2020
Backed by a red Kannon-do and a reflective pond, this Japanese garden in Takanawa will ignite with Kawazu and Somei Yoshino cherry trees during the hanami season.

Sakura Aquarium by Naked (closed between Feb 29th to March 15th)
Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa offers a state-of-the-art sound and light program, “Sakura Aquarium” directed by Naked, a popular creative company famous for its 3D projection mapping and illuminations all over Japan. During this event, projections of Japanese cherry blossom float through the aquarium to create a fantastic space full of weeping cherries all around from ceilings to the floor and the displays are decorated in hanami-style pink and white.

Hibiya Blossom 2020
Marking the second anniversary of the opening of Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, the Hibiya Blossom 2020 will see several sakura-themed events taking place around Hibiya Step Square. Aside from colorful flowers and the Hibiya Blossom Marche, there will also be a stage featuring live music performances.

Rikugi-en Weeping Cherry Tree and Daimyotei Garden Light-Up
The Rikugien Gardens is one of Tokyo’s most beautiful gardens and is particularly renowned for its Shidarezakura (weeping cherry blossoms). To celebrate their bloomings, the gardens are hosting an illumination event from sunset to 9:00 pm every night during the season.

Hyakudan Kaidan’s Spring Exhibition
Located along the Meguro River, which is famed for its cherry blossoms, the Hotel Gajoen Tokyo will be hosting a sakura-inspired art exhibition during the hanami season. In addition, they will be presenting a special menu of cherry blossom-themed dishes at their cafes and restaurants.
