Found a little outside of the city centre along the docks between Hagi and Mt. Kasayama, Hagi’s seafood market known as Hagi Shi-mart in Japanese, is a bustling market alive with food stalls. Naturally the seafood is the highlight of the market which can be bought raw and reasonably priced or tasted out in its many cooked forms at the far side of the market which houses the food stands.

Hagigoyomi Cafe is the perfect addition to Hagi’s sophisticated tourist information centre located in an old wooden schoolhouse known today as the Meirin Gakusha. The cafe’s friendly staff serve up gourmet meals for fair prices. This is a good spot for lunch or dinner offering different sets for a taste of various dishes including pickles, sashimi, tempura, and a range of tender meats.

While there are myriad tasty seafood snacks to get your hands on at the Hagi seafood market, make sure to not fill up before getting outside to Silk Road. If unusual fish dishes are still new to you, this is one of the best places to try out squid which is freshly grilled up in front of you. The unique menu invites visitors and locals to test out some new flavours such as seaweed soba and red algae noodles.

    Hagi Shinkai

If you like your fish fresh then Hagi Shinkai should be at the top of your list of eateries to visit. The centrepiece of this rustic restaurant is the huge fish tank which is home to fugu (or pufferfish), white squid, and even a shark - which, for the record, is kept as a pet not potential dinner. Despite its touristy appearance, Hagi Shinkai is a big hit with the locals which is proof those fish dishes are authentic through and through from the sashimi dishes to the fried and baked options.
